Thomas Friedman wrote an interesting Op-Ed in today’s NY Times about the new job market “untouchables.” He is referring to employees that cannot be fired by their employers. In the recent past, the untouchables were the lawyers, the engineers, and the accountants. When our current economic trouble hit, these were some of the first jobs to go.
Why?
Two reasons. First, part (certainly not all) of the job duties for these types of employees were able to be outsourced. And secondly, some of these employees had a strong sense of entitlement and were not bringing new ideas to the table.
If you missed the first part of this blog, click here to read about the necessity of being creative in your current job, or realizing that your job duty is going to be outsourced and learning a new skill set. To obtain this new skill set and new way of thinking, Friedman writes about the central challenge (italics mine):
Those with the imagination to make themselves untouchables — to invent smarter ways to do old jobs, energy-saving ways to provide new services, new ways to attract old customers or new ways to combine existing technologies — will thrive. Therefore, we not only need a higher percentage of our kids graduating from high school and college — more education — but we need more of them with the right education.
The right education will be critical. I look back at my master’s degree training and 95% of my courses taught me how to thrive in a corporate setting. I learned the intricacies of corporate finance and accounting. These are all skills I could have learned on the job. Anyone can be taught how to reconcile a balance sheet.
But there was only one course that taught me how to think. This was Jim Beach’s Entrepreneurship course. I believe in The Entrepreneur School because the new skill sets necessary in the world these days are critical thinking and innovation. All this mixed with a personality that makes you able to communicate your ideas.
These skill sets can be learned, but most likely not in your typical college setting. That is why a new method of thinking entrepreneurially is what will set you apart in today’s job market so that you become an untouchable.
And take a look at this article from today’s SiliconIndia. Companies within India are now adding tests in the hiring process to determine if the candidate is an innovative thinker. Doing the job alone is no longer going to cut it in today’s economy.

Who made the instruments currently played by both Itzhak Perlman and Yo Yo Ma? Who crafted the violin sold for a record $3.5 million at an auction in 2006? What instrument maker still inspires awe after producing masterpieces some 300+ years ago?
His name is Antonio Stradivari and he was born nearly 350 years ago.
So, why does Antonio Stradivari belong in a blog about Entrepreneurship?
We live in an age where most of our goods are mass produced for cost savings. Your Gap t-shirt has the same specs as one sold across the country. Even your piano nowadays was likely produced on a mass scale with little to distinguish it from others.
And so for hundreds of years, luthiers (stringed-instrument makers) around the world have been crafting their violins the best they can. And yet one person has the reputation for making the best violins in the world. Stradivari was born in 1644. Violin makers to this day cannot figure out what he did to make his violins have the perfection of sound unique to his instruments.
So what does this mean for you as an entrepreneur? What field are you currently working in? Is your good or service produced on a mass scale with little individuality? Are you especially skilled in the production of a particular product? Could you stop producing this product on a large scale and begin to target a smaller consumer base looking for products of exceptional quality?
Stradivari belongs in a blog about Entrepreneurship because he distinguished himself from all of the other violin makers in the world to create the world’s most perfect acoustical machines.

I went to Georgia Tech; I’m definitely part nerd. I love practical and pragmatic solutions to problems, which is one reason I love entrepreneurship. It can be a small problem like needing a seatbelt for my dog to a complex problem like how to solve the traffic dilemma in Atlanta, GA. When someone poses a good solution I love it.
Well, in our research for good entrepreneur blogs we came across Afrigadget.com. This blog is fascinating in the way it captures people thinking creatively and solving problems. The site is a boon for entrepreneurs looking for creative inspiration and problem solving. I pasted their mission statement below:
“AfriGadget is a website dedicated to showcasing African ingenuity. A team of bloggers and readers contribute their pictures, videos and stories from around the continent. The stories of innovation are inspiring. It is a testament to Africans bending the little they have to their will, using creativity to overcome life’s challenges.”
Afrigadget.com has been featured in Time’s 50 best websites and has been written up in different publications.

So as you continue to explore the blog I believe it will set off our creative mind. I learned some great things about creativity at The Entrepreneur School that relates to this site. Basically, to be creative you have to work at it and surround yourself with creativity. Afrigadget.com is a great site to surround yourself with. Hope you enjoy.
