Going to India for a Start-up?

We’ve written a number of blogs about entrepreneurship in India here at The Entrepreneur School.  Outside of the obvious factors that make India a hotbed of interest in business and entrepreneurship, we each have had interesting and unique experiences or  contacts involving India.    I’ve got a good friend living and going to school at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade.  We have enjoyed jumping on Skype and talking about business and entrepreneurship in both the US and India.

Since the crash he has been prodding me to move and set up shop in India.  Over the last year I’ve been tempted at times to do just that. My wife and our house have been two forces keeping me here.   Recently, he sent me an article in the The Economic Times that highlights different expats setting off and starting new ventures in India.   Definitely, take a look.

The article tells the story of an unemployed master chef who opens up his own restaurants.  It also looks at a Cal Tech grad selling LED lights in rural India and an entrepreneur who opened up a spa in Bangalore.  Unfortunately, politicians have found a way to mess things up with permits and laws as barriers and a law that requires foreigners working on business visas to have them converted to employment visas.

I’ve listed a few quotes from the article below:

Sullivan is among the hundreds of expats who have found that the severe economic crisis in rich nations can be turned into an opportunity in India. Compared to the US or Europe, where there are products and services in every segment, even niches, India is a big market, with few or no players, that remains untapped in many ways.

““India is now the new land of opportunity and thousands of expats are making a beeline to Indian cities to nurture their dream of setting up their business,” says Neill Brownstein, owner of Footprint Ventures, which funds startups by expats as well as Indians.”
