How to Get You Blog Read Daily (a trick)

There is a iPhone and iPad app called TrendWord that shows what the current 15 or so most popular internet topics, ranked daily. Everyday, the app tells you what people are searching for and what topics are super hot.  Google ranks blogs very high.  If you blog about a top topic, you are almost guaranteed to get huge traffic.  Try it.

How to set up an RSS Feed

If you are a small business owner, chances are you’ve had to deal with the question of whether or not to start a blog. Depending on your industry, a blog could be a great tool to do the following:

  • Establish yourself as an expert in your field.
  • Generate new pages to your website on a consistent basis, increasing the likelihood of being found for search terms related to your business.
  • Creating fresh content (Google likes this).

I try to convince most of my website clients to incorporate a blog into their new website.  For one client, her blog has turned into her newsletter.  Instead of a monthly or quarterly newsletter going out, a monthly email is automatically composed and sent out to her contact list.  This email contains highlights from her blogs over the last month.

So, enough about the relative merits of a blog.  How do you get people to read your blog?  And what is all this talk about an RSS feed?  Do you need one?

In geeky language, an RSS feed stands for Really Simple Syndication.  In picture form, it is that orange logo you see all over the place in the upper right corner of this blog.

Think of an RSS feed as a magazine subscription.  If you want to subscribe to Sports Illustrated, two things need to happen.  First, Sports Illustrated must create the content for you to subscribe to.  And second, you must request a subscription.

For an RSS feed for your blog, think of yourself as Sports Illustrated.  You have a blog that you are updating quite regularly.  An RSS feed is a simple way to allow people to subscribe to your blog.  An RSS feed puts your blogs into a format that can be read by a number of different tools.  People can subscribe to your blog,

To set up an RSS feed, follow these Really Simple directions:

  1. Go to Feedburner – http://feedburner.google.com/
    1. Feedburner is owned by Google, so if you have a Google account, sign in.  Otherwise, you will need to set up an account so that you can log back in and check on stats for your blog feed.
  2. On the main page, you should see an option ‘Burn a Feed Right This Instant.’
  3. Take the domain name of your blog – ex. http://www.yoursite.com/blog and type that into the box.
  4. Click next.
  5. You’re done.  Now click on some of the left side menu options to see what you can do with your RSS Feed.

If you are using a program like WordPress to do your blog, they automatically create an RSS feed for you that people can subscribe to.  But it is still a good idea to use Feedburner for another RSS Feed as they have great options for keeping track of how many subscribers you have, and giving you the option to automatically send all blog titles to Twitter.

Advertising on cellphone?

Has anyone ever done advertising on a cell / mobile phone?

I came across this company called foursquare which lets iPhone / Android / Blackberry users to see merchants that is around them.

Interesting concept, if anyone had any experience, please let us know!

Google now factors site speed in determining ranking!

Google announced today they will factor in site load speed in ranking  its search results.

What does that mean for you? Using a bigger and more reliable host, perfectly dedicated instead of shared.

Shared hosting usually cost around $5 – $15 a month while dedicated starts from $150.

You can read more about it here, google’s official blog for webmasters.

P.S. if anyone have questions or concerns, I will try to help as much as I can.

Need an idea for a business? WhyNot?

Are you looking for new ideas for a business? or ways to improve your existing business? I recently found this website called http://www.whynot.net and it allows people to post new ideas and then everyone would rate it good, neutral, or bad. They can also leave comments on why they think that way.

I think its a great way to find a business idea or to ask for people opinion before rolling it out.

How to gain loyal customers? By showing that you care

This is a local dry cleaner in portland, washington.

By giving away their service for free, they will gain loyal customers. As you can see from many peoples comments here

Of course, not everything can be given away for free, you have to find what is most suitable for your business, and take a look at the whole economic situation.

Anyone have some ideas to share for your business?

Podcasting Made Easy

The Entrepreneur School Podcast Channel

I was speaking with a friend yesterday who runs an excellent blog.  He writes 2-3 times a day and the content is outstanding.  It’s so good that I recommended that he try another outlet alongside his blog.  I recommended that he begin recording his blog posts in order to send them out as podcasts.

Most people spend hours a week in their car and have more time to listen to content instead of reading content.  Are you reaching those people?

These days, podcasting has become almost too easy.  All you need is a basic microphone (standard on most laptops now days), recording software (available free on Mac’s (GarageBand), and a way to upload your files online.  If you have a WordPress.org blog, you can download the Podpress Plugin and set yourself up so that after recording yourself reading the blog you just wrote, you can easily post the audio file within your blog in a very sleek looking Flash-based player.  And if you set things up correctly with iTunes, Podpress will send your podcast directly to the iTunes podcast section to be searched all over the United States.

The Entrepreneur School loves testing these new ways of communication because we know how important they are to bootstrapping entrepreneurs trying to get the word out in every way possible.  We just got our own iTunes channel for this blog.  So if you prefer listening to reading, you can click on the following link to go to the new Entrepreneur School iTunes Podcast Channel.

But I need to warn you.  If you are the type of blogger whose most recent post was from July and the recent one before that was from February, podcasting is not for you.  The idea, (as well as the idea for your blog), is to keep momentum going so that the people who subscribe to feeds from your blog or podcast are satisfied daily.  And be sure to provide interesting and relevant content.  If you are just making advertisements, good luck getting followers.

Paying for angel investors?

I recently read an article where angel investment groups are charging  entrepreneur to hear their business plan.

Angel Groups We’re Investigating
===========
1. Keiretsu Forum ($1,000 to $8,000 to present according to sources) The first group that was brought to my attention is something called the Keiretsu Forum. They have chapters all over the world, it seems, and they’ve been doing their program for a long time. I’m told by people that they charge between $1,000 to $8,000 to present and that a lot of good folks are involved. This is not publicly available
information: they hide it! Now, if there are so many ‘good people’

2. Maverick Angels ($500 to $1,000 to present).
This group is a splinter group from Keiretsu we’re told. They hide their fees in a “boot camp” to prepare you to pitch (what a joke).

3. PrivateEquityForums.com (stunnning $14,500 to $25,000 plus 3-5% of your raise to present!) We’ve received information that Mike Segal of Joshua Capital Partners runs this forum that is looking for up to $25,000 and/or 3-10% of how much you raise! I’m in shock by this one… could this possibly be true? Do you know anyone who has attended this event or, worse, actually paid these fees? If so, I need you to email me immediately.

4. Tech Super Club ($595 to present).
This seems like a small event, but folks tell me they are charging
$595 to pitch to angels.

the 3-5% of money you raised seems excessive, not to mention the $25,000

I would stay away if they are charging these kind of money to to hear a pitch!

3 Best way to improve your online reputation

The wall street journal has an interesting article, 3 ways to improve your online reputation.

I especially agree with #1. Reach out immediately to dissatisfied reviewers.

What do you think?

Wall Street Journal Article

Marketing!

Is pork white meat or red meat?

if you said white meat, you’ve fallen for the advertising campaign for the U.S. National Pork Board. Pork is actually RED meat, during the 80′s when people became more health conscious, red meat was considered bad for your health, and the pork industry lost sales dramatically. so in 1987 the US national Pork board started “the other white meat” campaign to re-brand pork as white meat.

This is the power of advertising. The slogan, and the repetition, now majority of the people in the US thinks pork is white meat.

Here is another interesting advertisement I saw on tv the other day.

Comcast- “cutting back on advertising is like turning off the open sign to save electricity”

I think comcast really nailed this one.

So, what are your advertising plans? hopefully you have abandoned traditional media advertising (newspaper/magazines)

Here are some of the most important advertising venues

  • Major blogs
  • Mainstream website advertising
  • Linkbacks on mutiple forums/blogs
  • reseller ranking websites/BBB
  • social media digg/reddit/stumbleupon

BTW, if anyone tries to sell you social media as facebook/twitter/myspace, he/she does not know what they are talking about. advertising on twitter/facebook has been limited, and generally does not provide good return on investments.

AfriGadget – Great Blog – Very Inspirational

I went to Georgia Tech; I’m definitely part nerd. I love practical and pragmatic solutions to problems, which is one reason I love entrepreneurship. It can be a small problem like needing a seatbelt for my dog to a complex problem like how to solve the traffic dilemma in Atlanta, GA.  When someone poses a good solution I love it.

Well, in our research for good entrepreneur blogs we came across Afrigadget.com.  This blog is fascinating in the way it captures people thinking creatively and solving problems.  The site is a boon for entrepreneurs looking for creative inspiration and problem solving.  I pasted their mission statement below:

AfriGadget is a website dedicated to showcasing African ingenuity. A team of bloggers and readers contribute their pictures, videos and stories from around the continent. The stories of innovation are inspiring. It is a testament to Africans bending the little they have to their will, using creativity to overcome life’s challenges.

Afrigadget.com has been featured in Time’s 50 best websites and has been written up in different publications.

Take a look at some of these pictures – (each links back to Afrigadget.com) -

So as you continue to explore the blog I believe it will set off our creative mind.  I learned some great things about creativity at The Entrepreneur School that relates to this site.  Basically, to be creative you have to work at it and surround yourself with creativity. Afrigadget.com is a great site to surround yourself with.  Hope you enjoy.
